One man and one woman
take marriage vows:
exchange glistening rings,
mimic oaths of tradition,
lean forward to kiss, and swear
eternal love.
Family and friends applaud, their claps
echoing like a thunderstorm,
showering the couple with hope, praise, acceptance.
We of a different kind
watch in confusion. Don’t we have access
to glittering bands of gold?
Are we not familiar with promises
of faith and dedication?
Yet all of our gestures of union
are denied.
Are we not of flesh and blood?
Can we not feel the fingers
of lovers entwined?
